06/08/12 - Hell's Gate

On the way back from our white-water rafting mini-vacation, Jen and I decided to stop off at an attraction that we've both often passed by, but have never visited: the Hell's Gate air-tram. Hell's Gate is the name that explorer Simon Fraser gave to what was considered to be the most dangerous gorges on the Fraser River. In the early 1900s, blasting in the area by the Canadian National Railway caused a massive rockslide which made passage through the Hell's Gate gorge even more treacherous. The rockslide resulted in some serious problems for the salmon that regularly make their way up the river, but construction of an intricate serious of "fishways" through the gorge was completed in the 1960s, which are also part of the Hell's Gate attraction.

The Hell's Gate gorge attraction (touted as one of the "most popular" tourist attractions in western Canada) is kind of cool. But the entire attraction basically consists of a couple of short tram rides, a "see-through" bridge over the river, some "interpretive" educational displays, and a bunch of gift shops. It's worth visiting... once... and only if you have a two-for-one coupon.
