Le Chambre de Pete *Pictures*

Well I promised you pictures and here they are. Here's a mini-tour of where I'm living:

A shot from the backyard, this is the "Blue House" (which is actually mostly yellow, but no worries) that some of the staff at the hostel stay at. There's about 6 of us in there now, including myself, and it's a fairly good place. A definate step up from staying in dorms with 12 other people.

This is the "sitting room" which has the TV, VCR, DVD player, and the Xbox. (To all of you that thought I would go crazy with a lack of these things, I told you I'd figure it out!) It also acts as a dining room and living room. The three guys are James, Will, and Wazzoo and are deep in a game of cricket.

This is our main kitchen, two fridges and a little stove with a sink. It's "fairly" clean, in which case I mean the roaches are small and easy to kill. It actually is clean, but I usually wash dishes before I use them...the bugs here are literally everywhere. Oh, the bathroom is next to the kitchen and its got a nice shower in it, but frankly it's not worth the picture.

And so we go downstairs to find my bedroom. Directly ahead on that landing you can see a little door that takes you to the "Hobbit Hole", which is a little room with a toilet and a sink. I literally can't even stand up in it, the roof is so low and the floor is high. Very odd. To the right of that door is the second kitchen.

When I first moved in this room was nothing more than a sink, some shelves, and a couple of really really old seasonings. Looking around the house I managed to find an old electric element, moved some dishes down here, and loaded up my food, effectively making myself a second kitchen. It's really nice to come down here when the kitchen is full upstairs, as it's a little cooler and I can cook whatever I need to easily. The only thing is lacks is a fridge, but I have a little cooler/bag that keeps things cold while I'm cooking.

Ah, my pantry. As you can see, all the basics are covered. I've got cereal, bread, some granola bars for when I go to the beach, pasta, sauce, peanut butter, some water, and sugar cubes for my tea. And, of course, I've got the local rum and some cokes. The only thing I'm missing is my milk, juice, and fruits and veggies, but they're upstairs in the fridge.

This is just the view leaving the second kitchen. That door with the two stickers is the door to my room.

This is my little personal touch. Of course, it might need a little explanation. Notice is says "aka Bruce" after my name. Since I've been here it seems half the people I know prefer to call me Bruce. Why? Because of good ol' Bruce's Country Market. People saw the shirts and just made up their own minds what to call me. Eventually it has changed into "Peter the Bruce", which is usually the title I have when working. Good people down here, great sense of humour to this place!

The Blue House again, shot from the street. It's about a 2 minute walk from the Arts Factory and about 5 minutes from town if I have to get there fast.

This is the quickest way to get to my room from the street. Over my little dead patch of grass, (the sod came from the construction next door, they had extra pieces and it was already kind of dead, they were happy to give it to me) I made myself a little walkway over the sand. I have to say, it's nice having a wall that I can just lift up and get rid of.

The little problem with my room is the driveway. Because it slants DOWN to the house, if it rains hard enough my room can get a little water on the floor. I solved that with a tarp! $5.99 at Woolworths (the local grocery chain) and no worries, mate!

And this is my room! Not a bad place if I say so myself. I got here and it was a mess. It took a while, but I finally got everything I need. You can see I've got a nice large bed to myself, a couch, my guitar, my ipod set up beside my bed with some small speakers, a picture of John Wayne that was sitting in the room when I got there, and the BEST thing of all, AN AIR CONDITIONER above my bead. Got that from someone at the Arts Factory. Man that thing is nice. Like walking into a big cooler on a hot day. Bought myself a bike too, $80 and now I can cruise around Byron Bay in style! Plus it makes walking around town a lot easier.

I think that's enough for today. G'day mates, take it easy!

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas!

I don't think I'll be able to get back onto a computer until after Christmas, maybe not until after New Years, so this is my holiday post!

Happy New Years!

There, now that stuff is out of the way. Not much has really changed from the last post, work isn't too bad and my place is coming along. I'm still attempting to clean it and get rid of what I have called the "dank garage smell". Febreeze oughta fix that right up. I know I've promised pictures and whatnot, and they ARE coming, it's just taking a while. Anyway, have a great holiday and think of me on the 29th! (That's my birthday, for those who don't know)

Cheers!

I've been here for a month!

It dawned on me today and it's kind of hard to believe. A month has already past and christmas is getting closer. Bizarre. But good. Very, very good.

Anyway, my plans have changed yet again from what I wrote last time. I'm still in Byron Bay, but at least now I have a job. I'm working night security at the Arts Factory Lodge, a really kind of neat hostel (yes, a neat hostel) that was founded in the 70's by hippies, apparantly. It's set up is really different, there are the usual dorm rooms and privates, but they also have a big teepee to stay in (that's where I've been), there's a campsite, "Island Retreats" which are single and double rooms set up in makeshift cabins in this walkway that makes you feel like you're in the jungle. Aside from the accomodation, there's a volleyball court, all sorts of free lessons going on all the time (from playing the didg to juggling) and its got a great atmosphere. Anyway, I'm working night security now from 10pm to 5am, which is kind of tiring but its not all bad. One of the best parts, aside from the pay, is the fact that I've moved into the "Blue House"! It's the staff house and I have MY OWN ROOM! My own bed, my own space, everything! It's fantastic.

So basically, I won't be leaving until after New Years. Anyhoo, I'll get some pictures of the "Chambre de Pete" sometime soon and maybe of the hostel as well.

Cheers!

Will I ever leave this place?

I'm still in Byron Bay. This place is incredibly addictive, you just can't bring yourself to leave. Every 3 days I tell myself I'm going to keep going up the coast, yet I always seem to just book some more nights at the hostels. Crikey.

It really is nice though, I really don't do anything all day. I now judge whether or not I've had a busy day by how many hours I spent in the beach vs how much time I spent in the ocean and whether or not I bought anything. Which is definately a good thing. I have been doing a few other things, some free fire twirling lessons (well, no fire, just a staff but still pretty fun) and the hostel I'm at for the next few nights runs a lot of cool free sessions like didgeridoo (STILL don't know how to spell that!) lessons. The best part is, I'm sleeping in a teepee.

I will be leaving soon, I plan to book my bus out of here tomorrow so I can leave on Wednesday. I'll head to Surfer's Paradise first but I'll just be stopping by. Then I'll head to who knows where! The goal is to eventually head up to Mission Beach and Airlie Beach so I can sail the Whitsunday Islands. I could get caught up working someplace too, who knows. Ah, the life of a wanderer.

Oh well, cheers folks! And remember, if you want an email feel free to give me a shout! stork987@hotmail.com

Sun and the beach...*Pictures*

...make Peter a happy guy! Finally, some decent weather. So yes, I'm still alive. I've headed north along the Gold Coast (technically) and I'm currently staying in Byron Bay. This place is great, it's small enough to have that small hippy community and still big enough to offer a lot of variation of activities. So far all I've done is go to the beach and relax, but the other night Sue (my fellow canadian) and I met up with two girls from Norway and an Ireland girl (all in our dorm), and after a few drinks we went to the Beach Hotel to watch a show. Lisa Hunt and the Soul Connection I think, they were FANTASTIC. It was like a scene out of the Blues Brothers, they put on an excellent show. I do have some pictures of Byron Bay and the local lighthouse, which is apparantly the easternmost point of Australia. And of course, the beach and water is fantastic. Just the right temperature to cool you off, nice waves to bodysurf on, it's fantastic. I should have the pictures up tomorrow, providing I remember to do that between eating and relaxing in the surf. Cheers!

The pictures were taken in the evening, took a walk to the lighthouse as the sun started to set. Beautiful place.

Main Beach, great for surfing and swimming. There are killer waves and usually some type of fish can be seen!

Another shot of the beach

I think this is my favourite picture of Byron Bay so far. It turned out perfectly!

The lighthouse at dusk

The lighthouse again, this time with the lamp lit.

One of the great things about Byron Bay is all the hippies. You seem them everywhere and each one is always willing to give you advice on how to live free and happy. Yeesh. Anyway, one of them spends his entire day building sand sculptures, then lights them with candles at night. He does some amazing work!

A spider that you find in most outdoor buildings, ie my hostel room and public washrooms. You get used to them fast.
